The modern tablet era begins

So the hype around Android 3.0, or otherwise known as honeycomb, has got me excited and itchy to get a honeycomb tablet. I posted a YouTube link of the Motorola Xoom add on my facebook and got an interesting topic going with my friends. The debate starts with a statement that Motorola (read Google Android if you want) will alway be following what the iPad does. In some way that is true as Apple did release the first consumer ready device. Was their success due to making their phone 4 times larger and a great marketing campaign? Well it obviously did, with something like over 1 million units sold (some really big number), that just doesn't compute in my head, maybe my IQ is higher than the average iPad user.
So will Android overtake Apple iPad? We will have to wait and see... I feel Android has a better chance as they saw their phone OS was good, but just making the icons lager for the tablet was not going to be good enough, they redesigned it and released a tablet optimised OS.
The debate will continue whether its about tables or phones or cars we all have our own opinions and views and at the end of the day all that matters is that you are happy.
From what I think may be the beginning of a new era I look forward to the possibilities of how this is going to change the world IT - from needing to be 'computer literate' to instinctively touching a screen; from computer geek to the general consumer: maybe one day soon more people will own a tablet than a PC... As a computer techie/geek what am I doing for that change?

It's 2011

So it's been a long time since my original post, it was a resolution for last year to write more, as you can tell that went well. So it's 2011 and the first month is almost over and it has been jammed full of events.
My daughter turned 5 and what a lovely little being she is developing into. Time doesn't stand still for a moment and trying to preserve the memories with my girls is quite a challenge. We wanted to do the traditional birthday zoo visit, but the weather predictions (80% chance of rain) had us choose a safer option - an indoor play area. This year we've decided to hold off her party till the end of the month once schools resume and all her friends are back from holiday. She is looking forward to her "Hello Kitty" themed party.
I then had a surprise from my eye - the lens implant I had done about 3 years ago came loose leaving me with rather blurred vision on the left. We (wife, mom and I) had a challenging time trying to get hold of the eye specialist on a Sunday to understand what we needed to do. Finally after phoning around we got hold of the specialist and saw him the next day. Three days later had a small procedure to put the lens back in place, the vision has been improving, but not quite right yet, need a month to settle.
We celebrated mom's birthday this past weekend and my wife and I are jealous about her Canon 60D that she got. What a fine piece of equipment and it takes such awesome pictures.

So on the tech front for this year I would like to set some challenges for myself, in no order of importance or priority:

  1. learn HTML5 and it's woes
  2. dev an Android app for me phone
  3. get more advance with Asterisk PBX
Thats all I can think of now, but I'm sure it wont be limited to that, or possibly it might given the fact that time goes pretty quick when you're having fun...

Lets hope this is not my only writing for the year...
